“As long as the curriculum remains unchanged for many years, it will become fermented. Our current
curriculum has fermented and is out of date. It needs to be modified. The current system just teaches the
students through parrot learning.”
(Dr Myint Thein – International Consultant for Curriculum

“Students need to have the chance to share their life experiences in relation to the lessons they are taught
in the classroom. Now, the teachers don’t give any marks to student’s answers if they are different from
their notes , so students’ cannot develop critical thinking skills.” !
(Dr Thein Lwin – Member, National Network for Education Reform)

“The Ministry of Education designed the curriculum, and then they urge people to teach exactly what they
design. They want people to only follow their system, so it blocks the creative rights and freedom of
learning for the teachers and students. So, how can we develop our quality of education?“
(Htwe Htwe Than – Teacher, Lumbini Academy Private School)

“In our curriculum, we use Burmese as our medium of instruction, so that creates problems for ethnic
students. This is why at primary level only one in five students complete their schooling.
We need to think about ethnic unity and show concern for ethnic minorities’ affairs. We shouldn’t just teach
about Emperor Anawrahthar in our history curriculum.” !
(Soe Tun – National Network for Education Reform)

Nay Lin Aung Finance & Accountancy Academy)
“The current bad education system is really affected by the lack of skilled teachers. This is one of the main
factors. Since the systems are different in primary, secondary and high school, their methodologies are not
the same. And yet once a teacher becomes successful in primary school teaching, they are promoted to
teaching secondary school. That’s why the primary school system faces problems because of a lack of
qualified teachers.”

Renaud Cachia (ပရိုဂရမ္ညႇိႏိႈင္းေရးမွဴး – Medecins du Monde) !
We also believe that health and reproductive health education should be part of the curriculum and there is
a way to do this in a culturally sensitive way. There are realities here we would not like to take into account
but not looking at them doesn’t make those realities disappear. Same goes for drugs. Drugs are a reality,
like it or not. Today there is no education about what drugs are, what their effects are or what addiction is.
Denying reality will not help these issues.”
